Building Spaces for Communities to Thrive

The Red Lake Band of Chippewa developed a mixed-use project on the former Amble Hardware site in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Mino-bimaadiziwin, an Ojibwe phrase meaning “the good life”, features 110 units of affordable housing for households earning 60% of the area median income or below. The first floor includes a preventative health care clinic and the Red Lake Band Urban Embassy, creating both housing and essential community services under one roof.

At the time of construction, this was one of the first tribal housing development of its kind in Minneapolis. The project made a significant impact on Franklin Avenue and the broader urban Native American community by addressing critical housing needs while also creating a cultural and community hub.

The development includes a landscaped courtyard, green space, a playground, a fitness facility, a daycare center, and a community kitchen with servery. Each of these amenities was designed to foster connection, wellness, and support for residents. Sustainable design strategies were integrated throughout the building, including high-efficiency HVAC systems, low-flow plumbing fixtures, and stormwater management techniques to reduce runoff. Residents also benefitfrom a strong transit connection to the Franklin LRT stop, located just east of the site.

Loeffler Construction joined the project team early in the design phase, ensuring that design decisions aligned with funding sources and project goals from the start.
