Rebuilding a Central Campus Corridor

Pleasant Street is more than just a roadway; it is the signature gateway to the University of Minnesota’s East Bank campus. Framed by historic architecture and serving thousands of pedestrians, bicyclists, transit riders, and vehicles each day, the corridor demanded thoughtful improvements to balance safety, access, and campus character.

The reconstruction project delivered a safer, more efficient corridor by widening the roadway to include a dedicated six-foot bike lane and rebuilding sidewalks to better serve all users. Beneath the surface, infrastructure upgrades extended the University’s chilled water system and introduced a new stormwater retention system to protect the Mississippi River watershed.
