Renewing a Community Ice Arena Landmark
Built in the late 1950s, Aldrich Arena was one of the Twin Cities’ first ice arenas and remains an important community venue for high school hockey, figure skating, recreational skating, concerts, and dry-floor events. The surrounding parking areas also serve the community year-round, hosting farmers’ markets, waste collection, flea markets, driver’s education, and storm debris storage.
This project addressed key maintenance, life safety, and energy efficiency upgrades across the arena campus. Life safety improvements included a fire suppression retrofit, new fire alarm systems, and replacement of outdated electrical service and panels. Energy efficiency was enhanced through LED lighting upgrades throughout the building and parking areas. Maintenance work included a full roof replacement and rehabilitation of the parking lot pavement.
The parking lot improvements were delivered in partnership with the Ramsey Washington Metro Watershed District, incorporating stormwater management features, new plantings, and placemaking elements to better serve both the arena and the wider community.
